Take Your Pick - You Are What You Drink

December 18, 2012

Necessity is said to be the mother of invention. And, one could just marvel at man's creativity as exemplified, among a multitude of others, in the creation of a need for liquid concoctions to make our life decidedly more pleasant with the occasional indulgence in such beverages. Water is notably pushed back to the sidelines when these alternative thirst-quenchers are in sight. Having water during the great ocean walking tour is always important.

Let's take a look at some of the kinds of beverages:

  • Spirits
  • These actually fall under distilled beverages, together with liquors. Spirits like brandy, schnapps, rum, tequila, vodka and whisky have no added sugar and has at least 20% alcohol by volume (ABV).

Serving: straight, straight up, on the rocks, with mixers like club soda, tonic water, juice or cola, as part of a cocktail or a shooter or with water.

  • Wine
  • This is produced from fermented fruit juice, usually from grapes. Sparkling wine, like champagne, is made by adding a small amount of sugar before bottling the liquid. Wines generally have 9-16% ABV.

Serving: chilled for white wine, room temperature for red wine

  • Beer
  • This oldest beverage and third most popular drink is produced by brewing and fermenting starches derived mainly from cereal grains. Lager and ale are two main types of beer. It usually has about 4%-6% ABV.

Serving: from a pressurised keg (draught beer), canned, in glasses, mugs or beer bottles, chilled or room temperature (depending the kind of beer).

  • Alcopop
  • This beverage, the name of which is derived from a combination of "alcohol" and "pop", is sweet, flavoured, and has some alcohol mixed in it. Alcopops are usually served in small bottles and has 4%-7% ABV. Malt beverages like Smirnoff Ice, and wine coolers are some examples.

    Serving: straight or chilled

  • Cocktails & Other Mixed Drinks
  • Cocktails are alcoholic mixed drinks containing two or more ingredients like soda or fruit juice, one of which must be a spirit. Other ingredients may include ice, sugar, honey milk cream, and even a variety of herbs.

Serving: chilled, with crushed ice, on the rocks, with frosted rim (be it salt, sugar, cinnamon or cocoa) and/or with garnishes

  • Non-Alcoholic Beverages
  • These are drinks containing alcohol but with only less than .5% ABV. Examples are low-alcohol beer, non-alcoholic wine and apple cider.

Serving: chilled or on the rocks

  • Fizzy Drinks
  • These drinks have no alcohol content. Examples of these are soda pop, iced tea, sparkling water, fruit punch, and lemonade.

Serving: chilled or on the rocks
